Greetings from Our President

Welcome to the website of the Tau Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®! We invite you to explore the various programs and services that we provide as we are “Soaring to Greater Heights”™ and working diligently to render service to all mankind in the areas of Empower our families, Build our economic wealth, Enhance our environment, Advocate for social justice, and Uplift our local community. We are a small (fewer than 25 members) but tight-knit group of women with a sincere commitment to the bonds of sisterhood and the principles of service which have distinguished our esteemed sorority for more than 115 years. We are a multi-dimensional, multi-generational group of women who reflect a variety of interests, skills, and roles including educators, administrators, medical and mental health professionals, businesswomen, homemakers, graduate and professional students, and retirees. We put these talents to use to enhance the New River Valley community—a community we are proud to serve.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the New River Valley possesses a rich history in the annals of American life. As a one of the first frontier areas of the United States and located within the Appalachian Trail (one of the largest footpaths in the United States), the region has and continues to be the subject of great myth, lore, and exploration. Although largely settled by European immigrants, the region has a small but vibrant community of African-Americans who also call the region home. In 1992, 16 women gathered together to address a community in need of connection, outreach, and the strong bonds of sisterhood that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® provides. Together those women had a vision and a willingness to see that vision realized in the form of a new chapter, Tau Mu Omega, in Christiansburg, Virginia. After two years of struggle to form an interest group, those 16 women chartered the Tau Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. What was once a seed of an idea, a narrative yet to be written, has blossomed into a rich and unfolding story of sisterhood and service.

The history of the Tau Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is not, then, just a collection of facts and dates, but an inspired journey through an extraordinary network of women who, for the past 31 years, have made imagination, action, and the impossible a reality. The history of the Tau Mu Omega chapter encompasses a committed effort to expand and enrich the lives of the New River Valley community and all of its members. Ours is an enduring testament to the impact a few determined women can have on the community in which they work and live.

Sincerely,
